Pharmacy Faculty Fellowship in
Geriatric Pharmacy/Geriatric Pharmaceutical Science
NAME OF AWARD:
AFPE - RPS INC. PHARMACY FACULTY FELLOWSHIP IN GERIATRIC PHARMACY/GERIATRIC
PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE
PURPOSE OF AWARD:
To enable a full-time Ph.D. and/or Pharm.D. teaching faculty member at
a US school/college of pharmacy to undertake a minimum 6-month intensive
period of advanced education training, and/or research (including coursework)
in geriatric pharmacy and/or geriatric pharmaceutical science. To increase
the number of full-time faculty at schools/colleges of pharmacy with specific
expertise in geriatric pharmacy and/or geriatric pharmaceutical science.
To generate pharmacy college faculty teachers and/or researchers capable
of making major contributions to curriculum design, experiential education,
clinical research, and basic research in priority areas of geriatric pharmacy
and/or geriatric pharmaceutical science.
NUMBER OF AWARDS and STIPENDS:
One (1) award at $25,000 to be matched by the applicant's institution.
Funds are considered a direct grant to the faculty member. No portion
of the award can be diverted for institutional overhead. The stipend can
be used for salary (including sabbatical leave salary) and other costs
including travel as designated by the Fellowship recipient and his/her
Mentor.
ELIGIBILITY:
The applicant shall:
- Have received the Pharm.D. degree preferably within the past ten (10)
years. (May also hold a B.S. and/or M.S.; but not an M.D., D.Sc., or
Ph.D.).
- Have (or will have completed in the year the application is submitted)
post-doctoral work in geriatric pharmacy and/or geriatric pharmaceutical
science, as documented by curricula development, publications, geriatric
clinical pharmacy service delivery, and/or basic research.
- Agree to carry out the Fellowship on a full-time basis and will not
engage in any part-time work. Sabbatical leave salaries may be accepted.
- Provide a letter with his/her application from his/her Dean and or
Department Chair assuring that the applicant will be relieved of all
teaching, advisory, service, clinical, and administrative responsibilities
during 6-month Fellowship, except for such teaching or clinical responsibilities
(not to exceed 10% of time) as may be required by the applicant’s
proposed project.
- Provide a letter with his/her application from his/her Dean assuring
that the applicant’s educational institution will provide a minimum
of $25,000 in matching financial support for the applicant during the
6-month Fellowship period. This matching financial support can be in
the form of salary and benefits during the 6-month Fellowship period.
- Be able to provide evidence of acceptance for the desired fellowship
training by a suitable mentor at a recognized academic and/or research
institution, not necessarily a school/college of pharmacy. Potential
mentors will be judged solely by professional qualifications and experience
in geriatric pharmacy and/or geriatric pharmaceutical science and may
hold a Ph.D., D.Sc., Pharm.D., M.D. or other advanced degree.
- Be a US citizen or permanent resident.
- Agree not to accept any other external fellowship, scholarship, or
grant awards such as from NIH, AHA, ACS, ASCP, AACP, or any other organizational
or government agency during the 6-month term of this AFPE award.

REPORTING REQUIREMENT:
Successful applicants must submit a Proposed Research Report and a Final
Progress Report. Instructions for the organization of these reports are
available from AFPE.
APPLICATION DEADLINE and SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Application forms and all supporting documentation must be received no
later than March 3, 2008 at AFPE, One Church Street, Suite 202, Rockville,
MD 20850. The Fellowship recipient will be notified by April 18, 2008.
An Advisory Committee will review applications and submit finalists to
the AFPE Board of Grants who will select the award recipient. Funds will
be available in two equal installments on September 1, 2008 and February
2, 2009.
