Springboard to a Pharmacy College Teaching Career Program

NAME OF AWARD:
MINORITY PHARMACY FACULTY NEW INVESTIGATOR GRANT

PURPOSE OF AWARDS:
To serve the needs of new minority investigators by providing initial funding for their research programs. The number and quality of scientists committed to research and teaching in the academic pharmacy setting will be enhanced through this grant.

NUMBER OF AWARDS and STIPENDS:
One (1) grant at $10,000 each.

ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants must be African-America/Black, have earned terminal degrees in their disciplines (Pharm.D., Ph.D.) and have a regular full-time faculty appointment at the assistant professor or higher level at a US School or College of Pharmacy. The applicant's initial appointment to a full-time faculty position, either at their current institution or from a previous institution, must have started no earlier than July 1, 2003. Faculty members whose official appointment starts on July 1, 2008 or later are not eligible for the 2008 program. Only one proposal per investigator will be accepted for review. Previous recipients of AACP NIP grants are not eligible to reapply. Faculty members who presently have NIH funding (grants, contracts) are not eligible to apply.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Application material may be found at the AFPE website at www.afpenet.org. Proposals must consist of the following eight parts: 1. Title page with signatures of department chair and dean 2. abstract page 3. research narrative 4. budget page 5. biographical sketch form 6. animal research approval letter, if applicable 7. human subjects research approval letter, if applicable, and 8. other supporting documentation, if applicable

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS:
Successful applicants must submit a final report, plus a copy of any reprints of abstracts/papers published in referenced journals that result from the supported project, upon completion of the research, and interim reports for research continuing longer than one year on the disposition of funds and the progress in achieving the goals of the research.

APPLICATION DEADLINE AND SELECTION PROCEDURE:
All applications (three stapled copies) must be received by AFPE by March 3, 2008. Proposal review and recommendation for funding will be made by the AFPE Board of Grants. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of awards by April 15, 2008. Funding for successful applicants will be distributed on or soon after June 1, 2008.
