Focus of Research: The use of colloidal gold to develop and characterize a polymeric diagnostic tool that will be used to test tear glucose levels. Colloidal gold nanoparticles will turn from red to blue upon aggregation. Concanavalin A will be used to stabilize the colloidal gold nanoparticles, and then known concentrations of glucose will be added to the solution. The Concanavalin A will attract the glucose and a color change will occur as the particles aggregate. Next, samples will be assayed by spectrometry. Colloidal gold particles stabilized with Concanavalin A will be used on a polymeric strip and when placed next to the eye will withdraw tear fluid by capillary action. The strip will be designed to be read by a meter, common to the glucose meters that are available today.
