2013 Rho Chi - AFPE First Year Graduate School Fellowship

NAME OF THE AWARD:
Rho Chi - AFPE First Year Graduate School Fellowship in Pharmaceutical Science

PURPOSE OF THE AWARD:
To encourage outstanding Rho Chi Honor Society members to pursue the Ph.D. in the pharmaceutical sciences in a college of pharmacy graduate program.

NUMBER OF AWARDS AND STIPENDS:
One (1) Rho Chi ­ AFPE First Year Graduate School Fellowship at $7,500.

The $7,500 may be used for any purpose decided by the awardee and faculty sponsor that will enable the student to have a successful program (e.g. , student stipend, laboratory supplies, books, materials, travel, etc.) related to the program of graduate study. None of the funds shall be used for indirect costs by the institution. The term of the Fellowship is 9/1/2013 - 8/31/2014.

ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants must be members of the Rho Chi Honor Society. An applicant must also be a pharmacy student in the final year of professional studies or a professional pharmacy degree program graduate entering a pharmaceutical sciences (including social/administrative sciences) Ph.D. program in an accredited U.S. school or college of pharmacy as a full-time student. Pharmacy students who have initiated graduate work through a dual Pharm.D./Ph.D. degree pathway are eligible if they will be pursuing full-time graduate study in the year the award is made. US citizenship or permanent resident status is required.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Applications must be received by February 1, 2013 addressed to: The Rho Chi Society, National Office, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, CB#7569 – 3210 Kerr Hall, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7569. The Rho Chi website address is www.rhochi.org .

  1. A completed application form
  2. A detailed resume (not to exceed 3 pages) that includes: Current academic status and anticipated year of graduation; memberships in professional, scientific, scholastic, or honor societies (include year of Rho Chi initiation); previous scholarships or fellowships held stating places, period of tenure and studies pursued; other academic awards and honors; and previous research experience.
  3. A brief narrative that describes your path to graduate studies. Include scientific challenges that you have overcome, specific motivation or inspiration or inspiration for graduate study, research or professional activities that have helped to prepare you for graduate study, and what professional and career goals you hope to achieve upon completion of your Ph.D. program. (Please limit to 2 pages.)
  4. Name of University to be attended and planned field of study
  5. Graduate Record Examination Scores
  6. Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended
  7. Letters of reference from three individuals who are directly familiar with the applicant and can speak specifically to educational achievements and capacity for graduate study.

APPLICATION DEADLINE AND SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Applications for the scholarships are due by February 1, 2013 and the awardee will be notified prior to the Annual Meeting of the Rho Chi Society. The recipient will be invited to attend an award ceremony held during the Annual Meeting of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) in March 2013 in Los Angeles, CA. Funding for successful applicants will be provided in two equal installments on September 3, 2013 and February 3, 2014. Funding will be released upon receipt of confirmation the student is enrolled in a pharmacy college graduate program for the Ph.D. Enrollment in a pharmacy college graduate program for the Ph.D. which must occur no later than 16 months after completion of his/her B.S. or Pharm.D. program.
