AFPE GATEWAY TO RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS (15):

PURPOSE OF AWARDS:
To encourage faculty to identify promising professional degree pharmacy students or baccalaureate degree students and encourage them to consider advanced graduate education and careers in research. Specifically, the purpose of the program is to increase the number of students who undertake a faculty-mentored research program and decide to enroll in graduate programs leading to the Ph.D. in the basic, clinical, or administrative pharmaceutical sciences; and ultimately careers in industry, on faculties of pharmacy, or in related organizations.

NUMBER OF AWARDS and STIPENDS:
Up to fifteen (15) at $5,000: $4,000 is provided as a student stipend for a research project for a full calendar year beginning as early as the 2003 summer session and ending no later than the end of the 2008 summer session. Up to $1,000 may be used by the sponsoring faculty member in direct support of the research effort.

ELIGIBILITY:
Faculty in a school of pharmacy accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education or faculty in any college awarding baccalaureate degrees who are actively undertaking research in the pharmaceutical sciences. Each faculty member may apply for up to two one-year scholarships by the submission of two separate applications. Each scholar, to be selected and nominated by the faculty member, must be (1) enrolled in a Pharm.D. program, have completed at least two years of college, and be enrolled in at least the first year of the professional pharmacy curriculum or (2) be enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program and have completed at least one year of the degree program. All applicants must be enrolled for at least one full academic year after initiation of the award. Students enrolled in joint Pharm.D./Ph.D. programs may not apply. The student awardee must not accept any other concurrent research support (e.g., AACP, AFAR, ASHP, or PhRMA). In case of multiple source awards, the student must choose only one.
