The American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education supports the education of pharmaceutical scientists and strengthens pharmacy education in our nation by...

  • identifying and supporting outstanding individuals who show exceptional potential to become significant contributors and leaders in academia, industry, association work, and other areas of professional practice through advanced studies beyond the baccalaureate or Pharm.D.

  • providing support to beginning faculty members for individual research and growth to strengthen pharmacy colleges.

  • assuring high standards of excellence in colleges of pharmacy and American pharmacy through support of the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education, special programs of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and key projects influencing the future of pharmacy education in the United States.

HISTORY
In 1942, visionary pharmaceutical leaders of the National Drug Trade Conference (NDTC) organized the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE) and unanimously endorsed its incorporation as an independent foundation to operate in perpetuity to advance and support pharmaceutical education in the United States. It is the nation's oldest and largest pharmacy foundation.

In 1992, drug industry and pharmacy leaders congratulated AFPE for 50 years of dedicated service to pharmaceutical education and unanimously endorsed a resolution pledging continued support to keep the Foundation a major force in strengthening pharmaceutical science education in our nation.

For sixty-five years, companies, associations, foundations, and individuals representing prescription, nonprescription, and generic drug research and manufacturing; cosmetic, toiletry, and fragrance manufacturing; wholesale, chain, retail, hospital, consultant, and community pharmacy, managed care; colleges of pharmacy; academic; pharmacy publications; pharmaceutical advertising; and health communications have made annual grants to the Foundation's educational program. Annual contributions provide fellowships, scholarships, and grants to help educate the very best and brightest students in the pharmaceutical sciences in preparation for distinguished careers in industry and academia.

AFPE is governed by a Board of Directors which meets once each year and an Executive Committee which meets three times a year. A Board of Grants, comprised of six leaders in pharmaceutical education, meets annually to award AFPE Fellowships and Scholarships to the most promising undergraduate, graduate and post graduate pharmaceutical students in the U.S.

AFPE is exempt from Federal Income Tax under the provisions of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions are deductible for corporate and individual donors.
