FACT SHEET:
THE AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR PHARMACEUTICAL EDUCATION

Founded in 1942 by visionary pharmacy business and academic leaders, the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE) operates as an independent foundation to support pharmaceutical education in the United States. Sixty-one years of dedicated service have established AFPE as a major force in strengthening pharmacy education.

AFPE supports the following annual awards, made in national competition, to students and faculty at U.S. schools and colleges of pharmacy:

  • Undergraduate Research Scholarships that support the participation of select pharmacy students or undergraduate science students in a pharmacy faculty-supervised research project, in order to encourage them to pursue advanced education in pharmaceutical science or clinical pharmacy after graduation;
  • Pre-Doctoral Fellowships in the Pharmaceutical Sciences that support the education of select Ph.D. students at schools and colleges of pharmacy who show exceptional potential for leadership in pharmacy college teaching; pharmacy practice; pharmaceutical research, development, and manufacturing; and other pharmacy careers areas; and,
  • Pharmacy Faculty New Investigator Grants that support the initial research programs of select new pharmacy faculty who show exceptional promise in their research and teaching careers.

Annual contributions from corporations, associations, foundations and individual donors fund the AFPE scholarship, fellowship, and grant programs. The AFPE Board of Grants, comprised of six leaders in pharmaceutical education, meets annually to evaluate applications and make awards to students and faculty nationwide. AFPE is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, tax-exempt corporation under the provisions of the Internal Revenue Code.

AFPE is governed by a Board of Directors made up of representatives of corporations and the following national organizations: American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, American Council on Pharmaceutical Education, American Pharmacists Association, American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists, Consumer Healthcare Products Association, Generic Pharmaceutical Association, Healthcare Distribution Management Association, National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, National Association of Chain Drug Stores, National Community Pharmacists Association, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, and the United States Pharmacopeial (USP).
