PARTICIPANT BIOGRAPHIES

JACK REED is the 47th United States Senator from Rhode Island. Elected to the Senate in 1996, Sen. Reed previously served three terms as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Rhode Island’s 2nd Congressional District. Sen. Reed has been a leader in the House and the Senate on education, health care and campaign finance reform, promoting and strengthening Rhode Island’s economy and on defense, international affairs, childcare and gun control issues.

After practicing law for more than a decade, in 1984, Sen. Reed was elected to the Rhode Island State Senate where he served for three terms. In 1990, Sen. Reed was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and over the next six years, he became a leader on a number of issues including education and health care. In 1996, when Senator Claiborne Pell announced his retirement, Sen. Reed was elected to the U.S. Senate.

A member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee and the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Sen. Reed is the senior Democratic member of the Joint Economic Committee.

KURT A. PROCTOR, Ph.D., R.Ph.. is president of the NACDS Foundation and Senior Vice President of Pharmacy Operations for the National Association of Chain Drug Stores. In his 15th year with NACDS, Dr. Proctor joined the staff in 1989 as its first Director of Research and Information. During his tenure at NACDS, he has had responsibility for pharmacy policy, practice, operations, education and research programs of the association. Dr. Proctor also led the effort to develop and launch SureScripts, the e-connectivity company formed by NACDS and the National Community Pharmacists Association.

The NACDS Foundation supports the chain pharmacy industry and the public it serves, in part, by offering education and training programs, tools, and resources. The foundation develops and implements consumer and patient outreach programs. In addition, the NACDS Foundation awards grants and scholarships and supports other educational and charitable causes across the country.

LUCINDA L. MAINE, Ph.D., serves as Executive Vice President and CEO of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Serving as the leading advocate of pharmacy education, AACP works to develop strong leaders for pharmacy education, to support excellent professional doctoral and postgraduate degree programs, and build relations with key constituency groups that will enable pharmacy educators and graduates to meet the needs of society.

Dr. Maine previously served as Senior Vice President for Policy, Planning and Communications with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). A pharmacy graduate of Auburn University, Dr. Maine served on the faculty at both the University of Minnesota and Samford University. She also worked in the field of geriatrics while affiliated the Park Nicollet Medical Center and Foundation in Minneapolis. Her research includes projects on aging, pharmacy manpower and pharmacy-based immunizations. Prior to joining the APhA staff, Dr. Maine served as Speaker of the APhA House of Delegates and as an APhA Trustee.

ROBERT M. BACHMAN is President and Chief Operating Officer of the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE). Under his leadership, annual AFPE scholarships, fellowships, and faculty grants have focused on identifying and supporting students and faculty at U.S. schools and colleges of pharmacy with the highest promise for distinguished careers as pharmacy educators and/or pharmaceutical researchers. He has expanded communication with academic and industry leaders, and enlarged the organization’s board of directors to make it more broadly representative of academic pharmacy, pharmacy practice, pharmacy and pharmaceutical business environments, and health policy.

Prior to heading up AFPE, Mr. Bachman was the founding executive director of the National Council on Patient Information and Education, the first U.S. public/private coalition established to increase the delivery of written and verbal prescription medicine information to patients. Under his leadership, NCPIE successfully advocated for increased voluntary distribution of printed prescription drug information by the nation’s pharmacists.
